Increasingly, a lot of companies have begun to realize the benefits of using a Learning Management System (LMS) to aid their Training and Development (T&D) function. With the HR Departments of most companies also undergoing their own digital makeovers by incorporating Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS), our recommendation is to integrate the LMS within the HRIS. When the HRIS and LMS are separate, the records of every individual employee have to exist in two separate systems. The HRIS will record aspects such as attendance details, department name and designation, payroll processing details, and so on. The LMS will maintain a record of the employee’s progress in terms of learning new business-specific skills and performance on various training modules. Thus, for the evaluation of the same employee, records from two different sources have to be analysed. Instead, if the LMS is integrated within the HRIS, the information of each employee can be maintained in a centralized portal.
Once an employee is onboarded, he needs to be put through a set of training modules to make sure he is ready to deliver in his role. Therefore, the HR Department would be able to conduct a more comprehensive evaluation of the employee and accordingly decide on salary raises and bonuses.
The performance of the employees on various training modules will reflect where his individual interests lie and also what type of role he is suited to. With the integration of the LMS within the HRIS, the HR department can perform an analysis to determine such individual goals, aspirations, and interests of every employee. Such an assessment can aid in lateral transfers and promotions within the organization. By helping employees get into the roles that they covet, the company can ensure greater overall employee motivation levels, and consequently, lower attrition rate.
By integrating the LMS within HRIS of a company, companies can end up saving costs incurred to the IT vendor. More importantly, because employees’ training needs can be assessed and addressed in a personalized manner on the basis of what was covered in points (iii) and (iv), each employee will be able to be more productive.
